"We must acknowledge that the way we produce and consume food is inefficient and we need to transform these systems."

When one looks at the history of mankind, from the collapse of the ancient Mayan civilization to the recent Syrian refugee crisis, the underlying causes of catastrophic events were often droughts and climate change, with the consequence of extreme hunger.

The food crisis is an ongoing issue. Early in the 2010s, the global food crisis appeared to be resolved; however, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the Ukraine war in 2022, extreme weather events, and economic recession, mankind is potentially facing the worst threats to its livelihood of the 21st century. Unfortunately, this dire situation does not look as if it will improve anytime soon.

To prevent this disastrous situation in the future and to ensure the provision of nutritious food, we must acknowledge that the way we produce and consume food is inefficient and we need to transform these systems. In light of this, it is highly timely that the efforts to produce alternative proteins in more resource-efficient manners are highlighted.

This report gives a snapshot of the current alternative protein market and explains how alternative protein technology can reshape our future table.
